Albania Relaxes VAT Compliance Obligations for Small Businesses and Introduces Exemption for Solar Energy Projects — Orbitax Tax News & Alerts

On 28 April 2018, a decision of Albania’s Council of Ministers entered into force that includes certain value added tax (VAT) changes, including:

  • For taxpayers with annual turnover of ALL 2 million to 5 million, quarterly returns are required instead of monthly, with the returns due on the 14th day of the month following each calendar quarter and sales and purchase books due on the 10th day of the month following each quarter; and
  • A VAT exemption is introduced on the import of qualifying machinery and equipment used in solar energy projects with a contract value of at least ALL 50 million and an installed production capacity of more than 0.5 megawatts.

Note – Albania's standard VAT registration threshold was reduced from ALL 5 million to ALL 2 million effective 1 April 2018.
