24 January 2019
Romania has introduced a financial assets tax effective 1 January 2019. The tax is levied quarterly based on the value of a taxpayer's financial assets at the end of each quarter and applies for banking/credit institutions in Romania, including branches in Romania of foreign institutions. The tax rate is 0.1% to 0.5% depending on how much the Romanian Interbank Offer Rate (ROBOR) exceeds a 2.0% reference threshold:
The tax is to be paid by the 25th of the month following each quarter and is considered a deductible expense for tax purposes.
