Canada's Department of Finance has published a statement from Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Chrystia Freeland, welcoming the agreement reached on international tax reform by the OECD Inclusive Framework. The statement also notes that to ensure that Canadians' interests are protected in any circumstance, Canada will move ahead with legislation for the enactment of a Digital Services Tax (DST) by 1 January 2022. The DST would be imposed from 1 January 2024, but only if the treaty implementing the tax regime under the global agreement has not come into force. In this case, the DST would be payable from 2024 in respect of revenue earned from 2022.
